Jinhee Park, SsD Architecture - Architecture
Rachel Reider, Rachel Reider Interior Design - Interiors
Kelly Harris Smith, FilzFelt Inc. - Home Accessories
Nima Yadollahpour, ONY Architecture - Architecture
As Kyle Hoepner, editor-in-chief of New England Home, notes, "Gifted and enterprising young designers are the people on whom change and progress depend, the people who will carry our field into the future. So New England Home is delighted to help promote awareness of their work and ideas through our 5 Under 40 awards."
The slate of winners for 2011 was selected by a diverse committee of individuals representing different facets of the New England design community, including interior designer Dennis Duffy of Duffy Design Group in Boston, MA; industrial designer Carol Catalano of Catalano Design, Inc., in Boston, MA; architect Lisa DeStefano of DeStefano Architects in Portsmouth, NH; and Kyle Hoepner, editor-in-chief of New England Home magazine. Lisa DeStefano commented on the judging process: "I was honored and thrilled to be part of such an exciting award recognizing the future of design in New England. The amount of talent to review was eye-opening, and it was great to witness the talent in so many different areas. I look forward to watching how they will positively affect our communities and built environment."
The winners will be honored at a celebratory reception on September 15, 2011, in Boston.
"We're really excited about this year's 5 Under 40 winners," says Kathy Bush-Dutton, publisher of New England Home. "Their vibrant, creative energy shows itself in cutting-edge work. I'm confident we'll continue to see great things from each of them in the future."
Each winner will have the opportunity to design a custom rug that will be hand-woven in the Nepal-based workshops of presenting sponsor Landry & Arcari Oriental Rugs and Carpeting, creating a direct connection between designer and weaver. The completed rugs will be auctioned off at the September 15 celebration honoring the winners, with proceeds to benefit the local Cambridge-based charity, Barakat. Barakat works in South and Central Asia to strengthen the fundamental human right to education, particularly for women and children, by providing exemplary basic education, increasing access to higher education, and advancing literacy. Tickets for the September 15 awards celebration will go on sale this summer.
